The LAA's Light Aviation Magazine (May 2009) reports that, on the first sunny weekend of the year, Schiphol ATC was overwhelmed by Mode S returns from GA aircraft below the CTA, filling their screens with data labels and preventing the safe conrol of commercial aircraft.

| Dutch aviation authorities had to declare a Mode-S prohibited zone to recover the situation. Readers may recall that many responses to the recent Mode S Consultation drew attention to the likelihood of this outcome, but these were dismissed by the CAA. |
