Occasional stories and pictures of relevance....
Chairmans Message Welcome to another SCOOP thanks to Richard the Editor (and his wife
Nicola and myself the production team). The 2004 dates have now pretty much all been set (with the exception
of finalising the arrangements for the Brass Monkey meet), so diaries
can now be inked in. As Richard mentioned, we are still short of a Social Secretary (among
other officers), so this year we will have to make up for that by having
lots of flying. We have still managed to get something arranged for
most months. The 2003 LOR draw awards are underway The Thirsk & Northallerton
Golf Club would like to take a balloon flight voucher and will auction
this for charity in September. The Yorkshire Gliding Club at Sutton
Bank are considering how they would like to receive their reward, but
I have suggested they might like to have us visit to fly a deserving
club official or member and hopefully they will choose this option.
They have a nice pint of Hambletons in their clubhouse by the
way. Anyway, if you havent already, then get those bolts tightened
on your fan and those batteries charged in your radio, and get yourself
flying in 2004 before all the scare stories of EU restrictions come
true. Happy landings, Phil. Editorial Its April and heres your second issue of SCOOP of the year. Unfortunately there has been no response for the request for people
to fill the vacant jobs on the committee. Any offers would still be
welcome. At the time of printing the list of events is believed to be correct,
but its up to you to make sure the event is on before you set
out! It will soon be May and time for the start of the flying season so
I suppose its time to get up in the loft and bring down the camping
equipment. Straighten the tent pegs and see if any new equipment is
required for the start of the flying season; see you there!!. This copy of SCOOP has the largest number of balloon photos ever, but
how many of them Richard Dont forget this is your SCOOP so if you see any mistakes or
want anything in it just say Zeppelin about. A news report on 4th of March stated that the airship builder Zeppelin
Luftschifftechnik Gmbh expects to deliver an airship to Nippon Airship
Corporation worth $11.8m. The airship measures 75 meters in length and 17.4 meters in height
and will have a crew of 14, it is expected in Japan by early August. But before it departs Europe it is expected to go on a month long tour
of Europe which might just include the UK. Hopefully this will become an annual award to promote contributions
to the SCOOP by members. The committee has agreed an award can be purchased each year, "this
means you keep it" for the best judged contribution to the magazine.
The current editor of SCOOP obviously will not be in contention for
the prize. The award will probably be presented at the Brass Monkey so get writing,
as you wont know what the prize is until the presentation. World Records. David Hemplemam-Adams has broken another world ballooning record. This
time he has broken the world record for altitude in an open wicker basket
balloon. He has beaten the old record and reached between 42 and 43,300
feet. The exact figure hasnt been released at the time I write
this. The balloon again being a Roziere balloon similar to the trans-Atlantic
crossing one he used last year in his successful Atlantic crossing attempt.
Again he decided to launch from the US in Colorado just north of Greeley. The current FAI world altitude record is 10,859 meters or 35,626 feet,
which was set by Per Lindstrand in November 1996. So by the time you read this the exact height figure should have been
clarified. A further attempt is to be made by Andy Elson and Colin Prescot this
year to break the 42 year old helium balloon record of 34,668 meters
113,740 feet after their failed attempt last year. Earlier SCOOPS Please contact Rita for your Pennine, Free copies are being sent out separately from the Scoop and will be
with you in the next few days.
