Chairman’s Message
Welcome to another year with the Pennine Region. We have to admit up front that we are a little short of helpers this year - not quite running on vapour yet, but getting closer! We would therefore be interested in any offers of help, particularly with running meets.

After all the efforts all round that went into making our 25th Jubilee last year a big success, please don’t expect quite as much this year. We need a bit of a breather! I should at this point make a special mention of Rita who has almost single-handedly documented the whole history of the PRBA in our new booklet "Ballooning the Pennine Way" (see elsewhere in this Scoop). What’s more, she kindly agreed that it would be provided as a present to all members. I know a lot of her personal time and effort went into getting it written and published, so thanks Rita.

I have one or two odd snippets to pass on – in no particular order…
New SA – those of us who mark up our own maps, please note a new SA on map 106.
And talking of SA’s – a Landowner Relations Seminar is planned by the Northwest Region, round about Easter time (the contact is Graham Church info@pendleballoons.co.uk). I would encourage everyone to consider attending, especially those newer members who are not sure if it’s supposed to be for them – it is!

Did you know - the FAA (the US equivalent of our CAA) are going to run trials of legal low flying by hot air balloons? For 1 year, starting 1-4-04, US balloon pilots will be able to apply for an exemption that will allow them to fly at 500’ over congested areas and 200’ over non-congested areas. It’ll probably take a few years, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this will lead to it becoming adopted generally in the US, and (eventually) crossing the Atlantic. For more information, visit: http://www.bfa.net/mainnews/fullnews.php?id=23

I should also like to thank Pete Dalby for delivering our feedback to the BBAC at the Icicle meet.

Happy landings, Phil.

Dave Sutcliffe’s new G-BXDZ taken by Graham Hill at the Humber Bridge meet, thanks to Graham for its use on this first SCOOP for 2004.

The 2004 meet calendar is beginning to fill up with the usual meets and a number of different ones thrown in some confirmed and others still on the drawing board.
Thirsk is booked already so mark it in your diary and lets see if we can produce more balloons than last year whether they are flyable or just to tether on the Saturday afternoon.

Richard

Welcome to New Members
We have 2 more new members at the start of this year they are:
Phil Hollingsworth from Thelwall, Cheshire and Julian Pugsley from Allenton, Derby.
Julian is looking for a pilot who would be prepared to give him a few training flights. He works some weekends, so weekday crewing and flying is possibly the best time for him.
He can be contacted on 01332 202856.
